The study of religion is a vast area of scholarship, spanning all cultures, traditions, and time periods. Because of the difficulty in selecting and arranging Web resources on all available topics, this page focuses on important Web sites that are well organized, kept up-to-date, and provide links to useful resources.

Multi-resource Sites

  • Wabash Center Guide to Internet Resources for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion — A selective, annotated guide to a wide variety of electronic resources of interest to those who are teaching or studying religion and theology at the undergraduate or graduate level. The principle of organization is the course area heading. Under these headings materials are divided into types: syllabi, electronic texts, electronic journals, Web sites, bibliographies, listserv discussion groups, and (for some pages) liturgical resources.

  • Academic Info: Religion — A great many sites are listed here in a well-organized fashion. Categories include religious studies, world religions, special topics such as Women in Religion, academic programs, and Religion in the United States. The site is maintained by Mike Madin, a graduate of the Comparative Religion program at the University of Washington.

  • The Pluralism Project, Directory of Religious Centers — The Pluralism Project was developed by Diana L. Eck at Harvard University to study and document the growing religious diversity of the United States. Currently, this directory exists in a sortable database and contains listings of nearly 3,500 centers across the United States, including Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, and Zoroastrian Temples, Baha'i and Pagan Centers, Islamic Centers and Masajid, Sikh Gurdwaras, and Tao Centers and Temples.

  • Religion, Religions, Religious Studies — Gene Thursby, associate professor at the University of Florida, provides links to religious traditions, religious studies, religious experience, and a variety of other relevant sources.

  • Virtual Religion Index — Site links are annotated and organized for ease of use. They cover religious traditions and confessions, library collections, religion programs, societies, and more. M.H. Smith has designed this index, which is copyrighted by the Department of Religion at Rutgers University.

  • Ontario Consultants for Religious Tolerance — Many essays on a variety of religious groups; includes bibliographies.

  • Wadsworth Religion Course Guide: Religion Maps — Provides a variety of maps.

  • Interfaith calendar

New Religious Movements

Sacred Texts

  • Internet Sacred Text Archive — Includes 46 different categories for texts of world religions.

  • World Scripture — A comparative anthology that contains over 4,000 scriptural passages from 268 sacred texts and 55 oral traditions. The material is organized under 145 themes common to the texts and traditions. This site contains the complete text of the printed book World Scripture: A Comparative Anthology, edited by Andrew Wilson (New York: Paragon House, 1991), which may also be found in our circulating collection (BL29.W63 1991).

Mysticism

  • Mysticism Resources Page — Contains a wide variety of links to different religions. Topics include women's spirituality and biographical information on many mystics. The Spiritual Formation page includes links to retreat centers, academic programs, and spiritual directors.
