Bible Texts

  • Bibles — A page from the Virtual Christianity site. A comprehensive list of site with online Bibles. Includes Bibles with searching software.

Printed Bibles in hundreds of different languages may be purchased through the United Bible Societies. The UBS Web site has a searchable database of translations and information on how to contact each country's Bible society to acquire a printed Bible.

  • Bible Reference Tools Tutorial — Learn how to use various reference tools, including concordances, lexicons, and BibleWorks software. Site created and maintained by Yale Divinity Library.

  • Bible Tutor — Offers an opportunity to master the basic content of the Bible through independent study and interactive self-testing. It is an ecumenical Bible study tool, concentrating on key persons, places, dates, and passages. Prepared by Luther Seminary, Bible Tutor has been used there as the primary Bible proficiency tool since 1985.

  • Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words — Search Greek New Testament words and find parallels in a few other older Greek lexicons. This is the 1940 edition; the 1984 Expanded Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words may be found in the GTU Library's Reference collection (Ref. PA881.V5 1984).


Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Dead Sea Scrolls and other Noncanonical Texts

  • The Noncanonical Homepage — Numerous apocryphal and pseudepigraphal texts.

  • Gnostic Society Library —A vast collection of primary documents relating to the Gnostic tradition, as well as many related texts.

  • Orion Center for the Study of Dead Sea Scrolls and Associated Literature — Established in 1995 at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Orion Center stimulates and fosters research on the scrolls. Their Web site includes texts of papers from past conferences, announcements of upcoming conferences, and a searchable bibliography of scrolls literature published since 1995. Vist the Cave Tour to see images of scrolls and the caves in which they were discovered.

  • Qumran Library Exhibit — Pictures of several scroll fragments (click on the small image to enlarge it) with description, translation, and brief bibliography for each.


Biblical Archaeology

  • Abzu — The Research Archives of the Oriental Institute of Chicago organizes and indexes Internet resources for the study of the Ancient Near East at this site. The Subject Index of Archaeological Sites provides links by site name.

  • Exploring Ancient World Cultures — Provides introductory essays on the Near East, India, Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, Islam, and Europe. Each essay includes links to related essays, images, texts, Internet sites, and a chronology.

Associations / Projects

  • Biblical Archaeology Society — Presents archaeological discoveries and groundbreaking Bible scholarship to a popular audience. The Society publishes a variety of resources and sponsors tours and seminars.

  • Society of Biblical Literature — Includes information about SBL's publications (with instructions for contributors), programs, membership, and meetings.

  • The Westar Institute — Includes the Jesus Seminar, a renewed quest for the historical Jesus. They debate and vote on the degree of authenticity of Jesus' words or deeds as portrayed in the Bible. The resulting publications are advertised on the Web site.
