Blackboard FAQ and Assistance Request Form

Please fill out this form to request assistance in using Blackboard. Or, call the Reference Desk during Reference Desk hours. If you cannot get this form to work, simply email the Reference Desk at library@gtu.edu. All fields marked with a * are required:

Questions about getting to the Blackboard site

  • How do I log onto Blackboard?
Either use the link available on the GTU Library homepage at http://library.gtu.edu or go directly to Blackboard at http://library.gtu.edu/blackboard/index.html.
  • I use AOL or SBC Yahoo and am having trouble accessing Blackboard. Why?
If you use AOL or SBC Yahoo, you may experience difficulty connecting to Blackboard. However, if you use a different browser, you will be able to connect. Please call the Reference Desk at 510-649-2501 if you have questions on how to do this.
  • What browsers does Blackboard support?
Please see our page on Supported browsers. We suggest Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.
  • Sometimes Blackboard makes me log in twice. What do I do?
Always start from the Blackboard homepage at http://blackboard.gtu.edu/, not the login page that asks for your name and password.
  • What does it mean when Blackboard tell me I have a problem with cookies?
Cookies are small files placed on your computer to enable another computer (the Blackboard computer in this case) to keep track of you. In this way, Blackboard can interact with you. To use Blackboard, you must allow cookies to be placed on your computer. See Information about Cookies for more information about cookies and Internet Explorer. For further assistance, call the Reference Desk at 510-649-2501.
  • Need further assistance? There is a place to send us requests for assistance with problems not specifically listed on this form.

Questions about Accounts, Enrolling, Passwords

  • How do I get an account?
Blackboard accounts for all registered students, including registered auditing students, are automatically created. Your login and password are the same as your WebAdvisor login and password. WebAdvisor it the GTU registration database. If you do not know your WebAdvisor login and password, contact your school's registrar. Cross-registered students from other schools should consult the registrar of the school the instructor belongs to. For more information, please call the Reference Desk at 510-649-2501.
  • What if I forget my login name or password?
Once again, ask your school's registrar.
  • Can I change my password?
No, you cannot change your password.
  • Why am I not enrolled in my class on Blackboard?
Even if you are enrolled with the GTU registrar in the class, you need to enroll yourself into the Blackboard class. See Enroll in a Blackboard Class for step-by-step procedures.
  • Why can't I receive email messages from my instructor via Blackboard?
Your Blackboard account is automatically created from your WebAdvisor record. If WebAdvisor is missing an email address for you or has the wrong address for you, then Blackboard will also either be missing or have the wrong account information. Please scroll down to correct your email address.

Other Questions

  • You are not enrolled in a class but you want to see the syllabus on Blackboard?
To do this, you must have a Blackboard account. You can get an account even if none of your classes are using Blackboard. Once logged onto Blackboard, click on the Courses tab, choose "Graduate Theological Union", and then choose the area the class falls under. If the instructor made the syllabus available, then you can see it. Not all syllabi are available. Print copies of many sylabi (again, not all) are available in the Reference Collection at the GTU Library. Please ask at the Reference Desk.
  • How do I print something out from the course site?
If the instructor has posted the text as a separate file (like an email attachment), download it normally, and open it and print it using the appropriate program.
If the instructor is displaying the text in the main browser window, the printing method will depend on your browser and type of computer (Mac or PC). For a Mac, control-click on the desired area of the page and look for a command such as Open Frame in New Window. Click on the new window and print. For a PC, right click on the area you wish to print, and proceed as usual.
