Ask the Librarian!

Who is this for?
Students, faculty, visiting scholars, and alumni(ae) of the Graduate Theological Union who need research assistance. Also people whose research needs require the unique resources of the GTU Library. If you are a student of another school and you need help getting started with a research paper, please contact you own school's library. Where else can you go for help?
What kind of answer can you expect?
Brief answers to very specific questions, or a pointer to some other resource (e.g.,a book, another library or organization, etc).

Please tell us your question.
A human being will read your question -- please use complete sentences!

We are sorry, but we will not answer:
Requests to compile research (for example, "Please send me whatever you have about ..."; "What do you have about...") or questions outside the scope of our collection in religion and theology. Where else can you go for help?

Sometimes if we know why this question occurred to you, it makes us think of other places to look for answers.

Where else can you go for help?

  • GTU students needing help getting started with a research paper should come to the Reference Desk of the GTU Library or the SFTS Branch Library. You may also make a PATH appointment for longer consultation.
  • Students of other schools who need help getting started with a term paper should contact their own school's library.
  • To see what books we have, check GRACE, our library catalog.
  • For Internet resources, including links to major denominational headquarters and other religious organizations, check our Links to Other Sites in religion and theology or the Religion Meta Sites page.
  • Other people with questions should contact their own local public library or the Internet Public Library. The answers to many religion or theology questions may be found in one of the following books. They are usually available at a public library or a college library near you.
    • The Encyclopedia of Religion - good for questions about religious beliefs and practices for all major faiths, and for comparative religion questions;
    • The New Catholic Encyclopedia - information on saints, church history / history of Christianity, Catholic Church beliefs;
    • The Anchor Bible Dictionary - answers many questions relating to the Bible. Also, Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible will help you figure out where in the Bible a particular saying occurs.

    The GTU Library is a private, academic library and regrets that it cannot answer questions from the general public unless they pertain to specific resources of the GTU Library.
