Blackboard at GTU: Information and Help for Registrars
The GTU Library website at http://library.gtu.edu/ is the gateway to the GTU Blackboard site. It directs people to the following links:
The Responsibility of the Registrar
The registrars at each school are the first stop for students needing to access Blackboard. Registrars distribute Blackboard account login and password information to students and faculty. The Blackboard account login and password are the same as the WebAdvisor login and password.
Important things to remember:
- During the first few weeks of the semester, students will be coming to you needing their Blackboard account information. Fridays may be particularly busy, since students often do school work during the weekend.
- New Blackboard accounts are set up once each semester, just before it begins. If a student or instructor's WebAdvisor account existed at that time, then the Blackboard account will automatically be created.
- If a student or instructor's WebAdvisor account was created after the Blackboard accounts were created for the semester, then you will need to notify Reid and request an account to be created.
- If a person does not need to have a WebAdvisor account, but you determine that the person has a legitimate need for a Blackboard account (registrars are the "gatekeepers" for deciding this) then you may send a request to Reid and an account will be set up. If Reid is unavailable, please contact the Reference Desk at the GTU Library.
- If an instructor has a Blackboard user account, but needs help with the course site (e.g., needs to be listed as "instructor" for course site, needs to have a course site created for a regular GTU course, needs help using Blackboard), then please contact the Reference Desk at the GTU Library.
- If you are unsure if a person already has a Blackboard account or not, please contact the Reference Desk at the GTU Library.
- If the email listed in the WebAdvisor account is incorrect and missing, then the email listed in the Blackboard account will be incorrect or missing. If the email information in the Blackboard account is incorrect or missing and the instructor uses the email function in Blackboard, then the student will not receive that message. Therefore, always verify that the email listed in WebAdvisor is correct and up to date, and direct the student to the instructions on updating this information in Blackboard (the student will need to correct this him or herself).
The Responsibility of the GTU Library Reference Desk staff
The Reference Desk at the GTU Library provides support and training for students and faculty. The Blackboard FAQ and Assistance Request Form page also provides all contact information as well as helpful technical information.
Important things to remember:
- The Library cannot provide students with password information. Therefore, a student using Blackboard for the first time will need to see the Registrar first in order to get this information.
- Faculty may set up appointments for individual training on Blackboard. Please direct them to the the Reference Desk at the GTU Library.
- Please contact the Reference Desk for assistance at 510.649.2501 / library@gtu.edu.
The Responsibility of Students
Students are responsible for the directions found on the Blackboard Information for Students web page. This includes:
- "enrolling" themselves into Blackboard course sites
- maintaining current email addresses
Important things to remember:
- "Enrolled" in a Blackboard course site is different from being officially enrolled in the course.
- "Enrolled" in a Blackboard course site is different from simply having a Blackboard account.
Why do students have to enroll themselves into Blackboard course sites? Although it is technically possible to download the information from Colleague and preenroll students into Blackboard course sites automatically, in reality it would be very difficult to keep up with students adding and dropping courses. Blackboard and Colleague do not "talk" to each other in real time.
